Hundreds of student athletes in Aurora and Cassville are now better prepared for the fall sports season.

On July 23, Mercy Hospital Aurora and the Missouri State University (MSU) Physician Assistant Program volunteered to provide sports physicals to 119 Aurora students. The free physicals were available for students from grades 3 to 12, including Mighty Mites, junior high and high school athletes.

Mercy’s team effort with MSU was also a learning opportunity. Sharon Giboney, clinical assistant professor and clinical supervisor from MSU, brought along dozens of physician assistant students to perform the physicals for hands-on experience. Mercy emergency room physician Dr. Jeffery Diehl, along with Polly Diehl, nurse practitioner, and Amanda Crim, PA, offered expertise to finalize all physicals.

This was the second year Mercy and Missouri State University have teamed up to serve the community.

On July 25, Mercy Hospital Cassville held its own free event for local students. Eighty-one athletes participating in Mighty Mites football and cheerleading were offered a complimentary physical provided exclusively by Mercy.

ER physician Dr. Joe Himes, Dr. Jeffrey Diehl, ER medical director, as well as Maria Bailey, PA, volunteered their time for the successful event.

“Before they step out on the field or onto the court, it’s crucial for student athletes to know they’re prepared to perform,” said Dr. Diehl. “That’s why it’s so important for us to offer these services to the community.”
